Fascinating Vulture Facts!

Welcome to my Fascinating Vulture Facts page. The Undertakers of the Animal Kingdom, on this page I will provide great Vulture Pictures, lots of info on The Vulture Bird, also here you can learn about Vultures Eating Habits. I will include information on the old world vulture family and the new world vulture family.

Vulture birds are definitely one of the most well known families of all the raptors. However, unlike the Eagle bird, Hawk bird and Falcon bird species this is not always for good reasons, they are thought of as vile, disgusting and ugly creatures by a lot of people and despised by some.

Actually the truth is quite the opposite. Vultures in flight for me are without a doubt the most beautiful of all the birds. It really is magnificent to think of such a large and cumbersome looking bird flying for hours on something as simple as an updraft without once flapping its wings!

Vulture Facts – Description

vulture pictures

The Vulture Bird genus is found on every continent except for Antarctica and Oceania, they are very successful as a genus and are very widespread. Vultures tend to be very large raptors with the smallest being the Black Vulture (Coragyps Atratus) which is in the old world vulture group and the largest being the magnificent Andean Condor (Vultur Gryphus) which is in the new world vulture group.

This incredible bird is the largest flying bird in the world and has a wingspan of a staggering 3.2m! It is also the longest living of all the raptors and can live more than 100 years. Now if those aren’t some fascinating vulture facts then what is!? (rhetorical of course :) )
The vulture genus is split up into two groups...the old world vulture group and the new world vulture group.

Some of the more prolific Old World Vulture bird species include;

Vulture Facts – Species

  • Lammergeier - Gypaetus barbatus

  • Egyptian Vulture - Neophron Percnopterus

  • Hooded Vulture - Necrosyrtes monachus

  • Himalayan Vulture - Gyps himalayensis

  • Griffon Vulture - Gyps fulvus

  • Monk Vulture - Aegypius monachus

The New World Vulture Bird

These Species consists of 7 species, this group also encompasses the Condors, these are;

  • Black Vulture - Coragyps Monachus

  • Turkey Vulture - Cathartes Aura

  • Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture - Cathartes burrovianus

  • Greater Yellow-headed Vulture - Cathartes Melambrotus

  • Californian Condor - Gymnogyps Californianus

  • Andean Condor - Vultur Gryphus

  • King Vulture – Sarcoramphus Papa

    The new world vultures differ from the old world vulture group like the egyptian vulture , and in fact, every other bird of prey in the fact that some of them have a sense of smell. The turkey vulture bird in fact has an excellent sense of smell and can follow the scent of a decaying carcass for many miles. The old world vulture group are like other raptors in that they do not have a sense of smell or at least have a bad one. All vultures are very intelligent and have learnt to follow other predators to steal food from them or wait for scraps.

    Vulture Eating Habits

    The Vulture Bird genus is unlike any other genus of raptor. To us humans they have always been the stuff of nightmares. The thought of vultures circling overhead and vulture eating habits certainly brings a shiver to most people’s spines.

    Whilst of course it is true that vultures are scavengers and do generally wait for things to die before eating it, actually, the favour vulture eating habits are doing to the planet is enormous.

    Vultures are the undertakers of the skies, they in fact will always choose fresh meat over decayed meat and stop disease and infection from spreading. Vulture eating habits are in fact not completely disgusting, although what they are eating may seem disgusting to us, vulture eating habits and others like them are what keeps the natural world in balance.

    Vultures and all scavengers are in fact necessary to the general health and success of the ecosystem

    Vulture Facts – Use in Falconry

    vulture pictures 2

    Vultures (as I have Said) are scavengers and so do not hunt living quarry at all. This means they are not used for falconry. However, many people do fly the vulture bird species. They are intelligent, quick to learn and can be quite charming. Also due to their social nature, many vultures can be flown at once. This is not something that can be done with the Eagle Bird Species , the Falcon Bird Species , the Owl Species , or the Hawk Bird Species apart from the Harris Hawk If you have the space, you can teach your vulture to soar on their magnificent long broad wings. They will circle above and it is mesmerising to watch. They can become almost dog tame and as it takes a lot of effort for them to initially get of the ground they will spend a lot of time waddling around after you. They are in fact very cute...did I just say that!?...

    I hope you have enjoyed my vulture facts and vulture pictures. The Vulture bird family are full of intrigue, superstition and mystery. They are wrongly accused of being vile and disgusting creatures and need to be given another chance.
